International Clean Air Day for Blue Sky

International Clean Air Day for Blue Sky

The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed September 7 as the International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies.
This year, the day is being marked for the fourth time.

The blue sky symbolizes happiness, youthful energy, and unlimited possibilities. At the same time, it reminds us of something essential: clean air is a basic condition for life and health.

The designation of this day is particularly important for the Western Balkans, and especially for Serbia.
Why?
Because air pollution in this region often reaches alarming levels.

“Together for Clean Air”

The theme of this year’s International Day is “Together for Clean Air.”
It is a global call to action.

The message is clear. Everyone can and should contribute to protecting the Earth’s atmosphere and ensuring healthy air for all.

Clean air is vital for human health and everyday life.
On the other hand, air pollution represents one of the most significant environmental and public health risks worldwide.

Moreover, air pollution does not recognize borders.
Its consequences are therefore far-reaching.

Air pollution is among the leading causes of disease and premature death. In addition, it places a heavy burden on economies. Productivity declines, while healthcare systems face growing pressure.

99% of the World’s Population Breathes Unsafe Air

Unfortunately, according to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), 99% of the global population lives in areas where outdoor air pollution exceeds WHO guideline limits for harmful pollutants.

Despite these facts, air pollution is still not consistently recognized or treated as a public health crisis.

The economic impact is enormous. In 2019, health-related costs caused by air pollution exceeded USD 8.1 trillion, accounting for 6.1% of global GDP.

Professor  Joseph Allen, D.Sc., MPH, from Harvard University, and Director of the Harvard Healthy Buildings Program, emphasizes that “most human exposure to outdoor air pollution actually occurs indoors.”

In simple terms, polluted outdoor air enters buildings carrying contaminants. Inside, air quality often deteriorates even further. As a result, indoor air can become more dangerous to human health than outdoor air.

Therefore, ensuring high-quality ventilation and air purification systems is crucial—especially in residential spaces, where people spend most of their time.
