What Happened During the Great Smog of London?

In the weeks leading up to this tragic event, a harsh winter forced Londoners to burn large quantities of coal to stay warm. The coal was of poor quality, and its incomplete combustion released enormous amounts of smoke laden with soot particles and sulfur dioxide (SO₂). Sulfur dioxide reacts with water vapour to form sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄) aerosols, significantly increasing smog’s toxicity.

At the same time, an atmospheric high-pressure system created a temperature inversion layer that trapped these substances near the ground. Combined with emissions from factories and vehicles, this resulted in dense, poisonous, and deadly smog.

Life in London came to a halt. Pedestrians stumbled through the streets, unable to see their feet. Traffic slowed to a standstill, and police officers used torches to direct vehicles. The smog was not just an inconvenience. It was lethal. In the following days and weeks, thousands succumbed to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.

Events like this clearly demonstrate how dangerous smog can be to human health. Even today, similar pollution episodes continue to threaten urban populations worldwide.
