Since we spend approximately 65% of our lives at home, this amounts to about 455 grams of CO\u2082 per person per day indoors. As a result, in enclosed, unventilated spaces, CO\u2082 concentration increases in proportion to the number of occupants and the duration of their stay.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to breathing, CO\u2082 is produced by burning in fireplaces, using gas stoves and other devices with open flames, lighting candles, cooking, and smoking.<\/p>\n<p>Plants are often seen as beneficial; however, at night, when photosynthesis stops, they also emit CO\u2082. While their impact is smaller than that of humans, in enclosed spaces without adequate ventilation they still contribute to the overall CO\u2082 concentration.<\/p>\n<h2>Where Does CO\u2082 Accumulate the Most?<\/h2>\n<p>CO\u2082 does not distribute evenly. Instead, it depends on room usage. Bedrooms typically show the highest levels.\u00a0 Long occupancy and closed windows at night often push CO\u2082 above 2,000 ppm. As a result, people wake up tired, yawning, and unable to fully recover.<\/p>\n<p>Elevated CO\u2082 levels also occur in living rooms (due to gatherings) and kitchens (due to occupancy + combustion).<\/p>\n<p>The pattern is always the same: more people, longer stay, and insufficient ventilation.<\/p>\n<h2>Can Air Purifiers Reduce CO\u2082 in Your Home?<\/h2>\n<p>No. Air purifiers effectively remove particles, pollen, dust, and microorganisms. However, CO\u2082 is a gas produced by breathing, and standard filters, including HEPA, cannot remove it.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, <strong>local air purifiers are not a solution for CO\u2082 reduction<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>ASHRAE also highlights that CO\u2082 is not a universal indicator of air quality, but it clearly states that CO\u2082 cannot be reduced without ventilation.<\/p>\n<h2>Can Plants Solve the CO\u2082 Problem in Your Home?<\/h2>\n<p>No. Plants cannot solve CO\u2082 accumulation &#8211; especially at night when they emit CO\u2082 themselves.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, indoor plants contribute to a sense of cosiness. Through biological and chemical processes, plants can influence the microclimate and overall indoor environmental quality (IEQ).<\/p>\n<p>However, it is essential to understand their limitations:<\/p>\n<p>Plants can contribute to comfort and certain aspects of air quality, but they cannot replace ventilation or solve CO\u2082 accumulation in a space.<\/p>\n<h2>How Is CO\u2082 Actually Reduced?<\/h2>\n<p>The only effective way to reduce CO\u2082 in your home is through ventilation &#8211; bringing in fresh air and removing stale, CO\u2082-rich air.<\/p>\n<p>Ventilation can be:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>natural<\/strong> (opening windows)<\/li>\n<li><strong>mechanical<\/strong> (centralised or decentralised ventilation systems)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>At first glance, natural ventilation seems simple.
