While earlier research primarily focused on particulate pollution (PM\u2082.\u2085 and PM\u2081\u2080), more recent studies have also included other air pollutants.<\/p>\n<p>The latest papers frequently link <strong>air pollution and diabetes<\/strong> to the presence of nitrogen dioxide (NO\u2082) and ozone (O\u2083).<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, the results are alarming. All these compounds increase the likelihood of developing the disease.<\/p>\n<h2>How Air Pollution Contributes to the Development of Diabetes<\/h2>\n<p>Type 2 diabetes is now one of the most widespread diseases in the world. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/type-2-diabetes\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20351193\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mayo Clinic<\/a>, it occurs when the body either fails to use insulin properly or does not produce enough of it. Traditionally, causes have been attributed to genetics, obesity, and lifestyle.<\/p>\n<p>However, an increasing number of studies show that <strong>air pollution<\/strong> plays an important, yet previously underestimated, role. Inhaling polluted air can cause <strong>chronic inflammation<\/strong> and <strong>oxidative stress<\/strong>. This disrupts insulin function and interferes with glucose balance in the blood.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, there is mounting evidence that breathing polluted air can alter <strong>metabolic processes<\/strong> in the body. The air also contains volatile organic compounds, sulphur oxides, heavy metals, and so-called \u2018forever chemicals\u2019.<\/p>\n<h2>Where Does All This Pollution Come From?<\/h2>\n<p>According to the European Environment Agency (EEA), the primary sources of air pollution in Europe are <strong>transport, energy production, industry, and domestic heating<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The pollutants that most burden air quality are <strong>fine particles (PM<\/strong><strong>\u2082<\/strong><strong>.<\/strong><strong>\u2085<\/strong><strong> and PM<\/strong><strong>\u2081\u2080<\/strong><strong>),<\/strong> <strong>nitrogen dioxide (NO<\/strong><strong>\u2082<\/strong><strong>), and ozone (O<\/strong><strong>\u2083<\/strong><strong>).<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>PM particles (PM<\/strong><strong>\u2082<\/strong><strong>.<\/strong><strong>\u2085<\/strong><strong> and PM<\/strong><strong>\u2081\u2080<\/strong><strong>)<\/strong> are generated by the combustion of fossil fuels, solid-fuel heating, and industrial processes. They easily penetrate the lungs and bloodstream, causing inflammatory reactions.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nitrogen dioxide (NO<\/strong><strong>\u2082<\/strong><strong>)<\/strong> mainly originates from traffic and fuel combustion in power plants. It irritates the respiratory tract and promotes oxidative stress.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ozone (O<\/strong><strong>\u2083<\/strong><strong>)<\/strong> is not emitted directly but forms through chemical reactions in the atmosphere between nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds, especially during warm, sunny days.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This combination makes pollution and its health effects pervasive \u2013 both outdoors and indoors.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PFAS, or \u2018forever chemicals\u2019<\/strong> (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), have become a global public health problem. By contrast, around 65% of our lifetime is spent in our homes. This makes indoor air quality just as important \u2013 if not more so \u2013 than outdoor air quality.<\/p>\n<p>Indoors, concentrations of PM particles, nitrogen oxides, and chemical vapours are often <strong>two to five times higher <\/strong>than outdoors<strong>.<br \/>\n<\/strong>This means that every home, office, or school can become a microenvironment where pollution affects health on a daily basis.
