Is there really DNA in the air?<\/h3>\n

Yes. Every minute, a person emits between 100,000 and up to 10 million particles into the air \u2013 primarily fragments of skin and hair.

It may sound unbelievable, but it\u2019s true. These particles contain fragments of our DNA.
\nThat\u2019s how DNA ends up in the air<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Air as a Silent Witness<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Now that we know air contains DNA-carrying particles, it becomes clear: air records our presence<\/strong>, because our DNA is unique.<\/p>\n

A 2023 study explored the use of human DNA collected from air and dust in forensic investigations.

The researchers collected samples from offices, labs, and meeting rooms. They discovered that particles in indoor air contain enough DNA to identify individuals who had previously occupied the space \u2014 even if they were no longer present.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s why air and dust are now being considered as new types of forensic evidence<\/strong>. It sounds like something out of a crime drama, but science has confirmed it:
\nair can preserve a genetic fingerprint<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

However, the discovery comes with risks: even in ultra-clean forensic labs, sample contamination via airborne DNA has been recorded \u2014 raising serious ethical and technical questions.<\/p>\n

In this context, DNA and air collaborate in the service of justice<\/strong>. But that\u2019s not the only side of the story.<\/p>\n

DNA as a Victim of Polluted Air<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Scientific evidence shows that polluted air affects DNA throughout life<\/strong> \u2013 from early fetal development to old age.

While PM10 and PM2.5 particles are most frequently studied, they are not the only threat to DNA.
\nOther airborne pollutants linked to changes in DNA methylation include black carbon, ozone, nitrogen oxides (NO<\/strong>\u2093<\/strong>), and polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
