While its link to respiratory diseases is widely recognised, fewer people are aware of how serious PM2.5 particles threaten the heart and cardiovascular system.<\/p>\n<p>A 2023 study analysing four million hospitalisations for heart attacks found that cases increased as PM2.5 concentrations rose \u2013 even when those concentrations were below the legal limits set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), USA.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What Are PM2.5 Particles?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>PM2.5 particles are the global reference standard for measuring air quality. They include all particles smaller than 2.5 \u00b5m. To illustrate, 2.5 \u00b5m is about 3% of the diameter of a human hair.<\/p>\n<p>The values used to express PM2.5 concentrations represent the total mass of all particles smaller than 2.5 \u00b5m in each volume of air.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>How Do PM2.5 Particles Affect the Heart?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think most people realize just how harmful air pollution is to our health, because it is mostly invisible.\u201d says Mary Berlik Rice, Mark and Catherine Winkler Associate Professor of Environmental Respiratory Health, and director of the Center for Climate, Health, and the Global Environment.<\/p>\n<p>PM2.5 particles are microscopic. The burning of fossil fuels, industrial production, wildfires, and more generates them. Due to their small size, they penetrate deep into the lungs, enter the bloodstream, and trigger inflammatory processes that increase the risk of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Heart attacks and strokes<\/li>\n<li>Arrhythmias and heart rhythm disorders<\/li>\n<li>High blood pressure<\/li>\n<li>Chronic inflammation of blood vessels<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For all these reasons, it is clear that PM2.5 particles threaten heart health on multiple levels \u2013 from acute events to chronic diseases.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>How Dangerous Is PM2.5 Exposure?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) webinar &#8220;Toxic air is fueling NCDs. Why are we not taking action?&#8221;, an increase of 10 \u00b5g\/m\u00b3 in PM2.5 concentrations raises the risk of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Type 2 diabetes by 10%<\/li>\n<li>Heart attacks by 13%<\/li>\n<li>Strokes, cancer, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) by 16%<\/li>\n<li>Hypertension by 17%<\/li>\n<li>Childhood asthma by 34%<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/breathing-danger-exploring-link-between-pm25-dementia-gordana-blagic-oyj0f\/?trackingId=tMwubN9HR%2FG%2B%2BPO88SHL4g%3D%3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dementia<\/a> by up to 46%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The most vulnerable individuals include those with pre-existing heart or lung diseases, diabetes, the elderly, economically disadvantaged communities, pregnant women, and children.
