The EPA aligned this standard with the latest scientific evidence. That evidence shows a strong link between PM pollution and human health. Therefore, the EPA tightened the limits for PM particles. As a result, the \u201chealth-safe\u201d level is now significantly lower.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"401\" data-end=\"426\">PM Particle Categories<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"428\" data-end=\"529\">Scientists introduced the PM1, PM2.5, and PM10 categories to make particle sizes easier to understand.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"531\" data-end=\"621\">Each PM category includes all smaller particles. In other words, PM levels are cumulative.<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"623\" data-end=\"842\">\n<li data-start=\"623\" data-end=\"710\">\n<p data-start=\"625\" data-end=\"710\"><strong data-start=\"625\" data-end=\"633\">PM10<\/strong> includes all particles smaller than 10 \u00b5m. It also includes PM2.5 and PM1.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"711\" data-end=\"790\">\n<p data-start=\"713\" data-end=\"790\"><strong data-start=\"713\" data-end=\"722\">PM2.5<\/strong> includes all particles smaller than 2.5 \u00b5m. It also includes PM1.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"791\" data-end=\"842\">\n<p data-start=\"793\" data-end=\"842\"><strong data-start=\"793\" data-end=\"800\">PM1<\/strong> includes all particles smaller than 1 \u00b5m.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 data-start=\"849\" data-end=\"888\">The New EPA PM Standard: Safe Values<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"890\" data-end=\"1036\">The EPA reviewed the annual National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS) for health impacts. Then it lowered the allowed level of fine particles.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1038\" data-end=\"1281\">Specifically, the EPA reduced the annual PM2.5 limit\u00a0from <strong data-start=\"1104\" data-end=\"1127\">12 \u00b5g\/m\u00b3 to 9 \u00b5g\/m\u00b3<\/strong>. This stricter limit should improve air cleanliness for families, workers, and communities. Consequently, it should support better overall public health.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1283\" data-end=\"1400\">Next, the new PM2.5 limit required updates to the <strong data-start=\"1333\" data-end=\"1360\">Air Quality Index (AQI)<\/strong>. So the EPA revised the AQI thresholds.<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1402\" data-end=\"1711\">\n<li data-start=\"1402\" data-end=\"1501\">\n<p data-start=\"1404\" data-end=\"1501\">The boundary between <strong data-start=\"1425\" data-end=\"1441\">Good (green)<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"1446\" data-end=\"1467\">Moderate (yellow)<\/strong> air quality is now <strong data-start=\"1487\" data-end=\"1498\">nine \u00b5g\/m\u00b3<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1502\" data-end=\"1610\">\n<p data-start=\"1504\" data-end=\"1610\">The EPA also lowered the thresholds for <strong data-start=\"1544\" data-end=\"1557\">Unhealthy<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"1559\" data-end=\"1577\">Very Unhealthy<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"1583\" data-end=\"1596\">Hazardous<\/strong> categories.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1611\" data-end=\"1711\">\n<p data-start=\"1613\" data-end=\"1711\">For example, air becomes <strong data-start=\"1638\" data-end=\"1651\">Hazardous<\/strong> at <strong data-start=\"1655\" data-end=\"1670\">225.5 \u00b5g\/m\u00b3<\/strong>, instead of the earlier <strong data-start=\"1695\" data-end=\"1710\">250.5 \u00b5g\/m\u00b3<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 data-start=\"1718\" data-end=\"1765\">Why Did the EPA Introduce a New PM Standard?<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1767\" data-end=\"1883\">Recent research shows clear links between PM pollution and many diseases. In the worst cases, PM exposure leads to premature death.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"2650\" data-end=\"2691\">Health Benefits of the New PM Standard<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2693\" data-end=\"2765\">The EPA estimates major benefits from implementing the revised standard.<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2767\" data-end=\"2964\">\n<li data-start=\"2767\" data-end=\"2821\">\n<p data-start=\"2769\" data-end=\"2821\">It could prevent <strong data-start=\"2786\" data-end=\"2818\">up to 4,500 premature deaths<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2822\" data-end=\"2878\">\n<p data-start=\"2824\" data-end=\"2878\">It could also avoid <strong data-start=\"2844\" data-end=\"2875\">about 290,000 lost workdays<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2879\" data-end=\"2964\">\n<p data-start=\"2881\" data-end=\"2964\">In addition, it could deliver <strong data-start=\"2911\" data-end=\"2963\">up to $46 billion in net health benefits by 2032<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2966\" data-end=\"3031\">So, every dollar invested in PM reduction brings a strong return.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"3038\" data-end=\"3069\">Primary Sources of PM Pollution<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3071\" data-end=\"3121\">PM pollution comes from many sources. For example:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3122\" data-end=\"3216\">\n<li data-start=\"3122\" data-end=\"3147\">\n<p data-start=\"3124\" data-end=\"3147\">Combustion processes,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3148\" data-end=\"3171\">\n<p data-start=\"3150\" data-end=\"3171\">Construction sites,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3172\" data-end=\"3198\">\n<p data-start=\"3174\" data-end=\"3198\">Industrial production,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3199\" data-end=\"3216\">\n<p data-start=\"3201\" data-end=\"3216\">Transportation.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"3218\" data-end=\"3514\">In addition, chemical reactions in the atmosphere create new particles. These reactions involve pollutants such as sulfur dioxide (SO\u2082) and nitrogen oxides (NO\u2093). Power plants, gasoline and diesel engines, and several industrial activities emit these gases. Consequently, they increase PM levels.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"3521\" data-end=\"3546\">A Broader EPA Strategy<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3548\" data-end=\"3809\">The EPA supports the revised PM standard with complementary measures. These measures target emissions from key sources. They also require significant investment. Yet the goal remains clear: drive economic growth and build healthier communities at the same time.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3811\" data-end=\"3939\">Therefore, the EPA strategy focuses on long-term health and productivity. It also supports renewed industrial output in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3941\" data-end=\"4166\">Significantly, PM pollution does not affect all communities equally. It harms vulnerable groups more. Because of that, stronger Clean Air Act standards matter.
